Submitting Applications Online: Requirements and Security FAQs

Q.   Why do I need 128-bit encryption?
A. CEFCU requires your browser to support 128-bit encryption to access any of our secure online applications or documents.

Q. What is encryption?
A. Encryption is a process that scrambles the information you send and receive over the Internet through your browser. This protects your information and prevents anyone else from seeing it. CEFCU utilizes 128-bit encryption, the strongest browser encryption currently available.

Q. What is a browser?
A. A browser is a program that you use to view Web pages on the Internet. Common browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer®, Netscape® Communicator and AOL®.

Q. What version browser do I need?
A. You need one of the versions listed below:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer®: You will need to have version 5.5 or higher installed on your computer.
  • Netscape® Communicator: You will need to have version 4.7 or higher installed on your computer.
  • AOL®: You will need to have version 5 or higher installed on your computer.

Q. How do I find out if my browser supports 128-bit encryption?
A. Microsoft Internet Explorer®:
From the Internet Explorer menu bar, click Help / About Internet Explorer. Your browser version number appears next to "Version". Under the "Version" information is the "Cipher Strength". The number that appears here indicates your encryption level. If it does not say 128-bit, you need to upgrade your browser.

Netscape® Communicator:
From the Netscape Navigator menu bar, select Help / About Navigator… (or Communicator). Look for the section on the left that begins "Contains encryption software from RSA Data Security, Inc." If the next paragraph reads, "This version supports U.S. security…", then your browser supports 128-bit encryption. However, if it reads "international security", then your browser only supports 40-bit encryption and you will need to upgrade.

Q. How do I get 128-bit encryption?
A. To get 128-bit encryption, you will need to upgrade your browser software to the most recent version. If you are using a browser other than Microsoft® Internet Explorer or Netscape® Communicator/Navigator, please refer to your software maker for upgrade information. AOL users must be using AOL version 5.0 or higher.

Microsoft Internet Explorer®:
Go to and follow the screen directions to download the most recent browser. WARNING: The browser download time varies depending upon your Internet connection/modem speed.

Netscape® Communicator:
Go to and follow the screen directions to download the most recent browser. WARNING: The browser download time varies, depending on your Internet connection/modem speed.
